Stateless – produced By Kali Theatre

Posted on

I had been writing Stateless, a new play,  since 2014 when I received a one hour slot at The Nottingham Playhouse to write anything I wanted.

I was working at my local council at the time and noticed a man, on my way home from work, sat in a security mobile unit and I started thinking what would happen if he received a visit from someone who’s intentions weren’t quite as genuine as they made out. This is where the story was born.

After the performance I received some feedback which spurred me on to continue writing the piece. I was successful in a six month writers program with Kali theatre, who work with South Asian women, where I developed the piece.

They decided to produce Stateless and another writers’ play (She is Not herself by Veronica J Dewan) and run it for one week at The Tristan Bates theatre. It was one of the best and hardest experiences in my creative career.

The script went through rigorous editing and I learnt the painful art of truly letting go. It was also a cathartic process as it allowed us to strip everything back and get to the heart of what was going on in the story, which also developed me as a Writer.

The play received some great reviews. Take a look below.

I’m a believer on ending a high, which gives me hesitation to revive the play again. Not for any superstitious reason but because it might not get the same reception the longer it’s stretched out.

But I do wonder whether we should always really leave the party when we’re still having fun?

  1. Hiya, I am really glad I’ve found this information. Today bloggers publish just about gossips and internet and this is actually frustrating. A good web site with interesting content, that’s what I need. Thank you for keeping this web site, I will be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can not find it.
